Making intarsia can be a relatively inexpensive hobby that basically requires no more than either a scrollsaw or bandsaw, sandpaper, wood, glue, and a plan to get started.

There are specific tools that can make your life easier - the bowsander is an example - and many intarsians go on to acquire sanding drums of various types, flexible drives like a Dremel, and a variety of other tools that make life easier - but all of these can be added as you become more accomplished or as fund permit.

Many woodworkers - scrollsaw users in particular - already have these thinks when they take up intarsia. Many people need nothing more than a plan and away they go.

For those who need a little more help, we have a number of alternatives shown below.

Probably the most comprehensive book on intarsia available - written by Bob Beacham (owner of this site) with award-winning Canadian Fred Martin and internationally recognised American Newton R Ferguson. For full details just click the picture on the right:

Ever wondered how those "creases" are created?

Some people carefully carve them, others use a rotary tool like a Dremel or Foredom to sculpt them. Well known intarsian Newton R Ferguson uses a very effective method which is shown in detail here.

Newton has also produced a highly detailed guide to creating "Happy Flower" (plan available in our shop) using the popular "cut & paste" method. 38 slides - each with a photo to illustrate the procedure - lead you step by step through preparation, cutting, assembly and finishing. It's not only a great guide to this piece but is an invaluable learning tool to help you make any of our plans...

Available to download now for just $4.95!

After payment you will be taken to a separate page where you can download the presentation. This is a Powerpoint presentation so you'll need Microsoft Office to use it. It's over 2mb file size so please be patient while it downloads - it's worth it!
