Top intarsian Newton R. Ferguson suggests this method for creating those creases that add extra "life" to your intarsia. He's asked us to point out that his intarsia skills are much better than his photography. We don't think there's a lot wrong with his pictures, but we'll agree his intarsia is even better!
1. 2. 3.
1. Attach the pattern to your timber using your preferred method.
2. Carefully cut the piece out.
3. Cut down the "crease" line. Try to keep this as smooth as possible to ensure a fine line. Turn the saw off before backing out.
4. 5. 6.
4. We've finished cutting, time to start sanding the piece.
5. Now gently sand the "crease". Using a v-block helps create the curved edges.
6. Nearly there. Just a bit more fine finishing to go.
7.
7. Tidy up the "crease" with a thin strip of fine abrasive.
You can see excellent examples of this technique used on a number of Newton's intarsia plans, all available from our Intarsia Shop
